Two small mistakes cost more marks in PTE writing than almost anything else: writing the + adjective + of instead of the + noun + of, and choosing the wrong preposition after a noun or adjective. The important of education, the beneficial of green technology, the need of change and capable of reduce pollution all come from knowing the word but not the pattern.
This quiz drills the patterns themselves. It has 86 multiple-choice questions in seven rule groups, and you can practise any single group from the Coverage panel. Every answer shows the rule and the wrong version side by side, and your wrong answers are stored on your own device for seven days so you can retake only what you missed.
The eight groups: 1 adjective to noun conversion · 2 nouns that do not take of · 3 what follows a preposition · 4 infinitive to versus preposition to · 5 adjective + preposition · 6 reporting structures for summaries · 7 the impact / effect of X on Y essay frame.
The One Rule That Fixes Most of These Mistakes
THE + NOUN + OF — never the + adjective + of.
✓ the importance of education the benefits of green technology the effectiveness of the policy
the important of education the beneficial of green technology the effective of the policy
A second rule follows from it: after of – or after any preposition – use a noun, a pronoun or a verb + ing, never a base verb. So it is the importance of protecting the environment, not the importance of protect the environment.
1. Adjective to Noun Conversion Table
| Adjective | Correct noun phrase | Example |
|---|---|---|
| important | the importance of | the importance of education |

2. Nouns That Do Not Take "of"
This is where a good strategy goes wrong. Not every noun takes of – memorise these as complete phrases.
| Correct | Incorrect |
|---|---|
| ✓ the need for change | the need of change |
| ✓ the reason for pollution | the reason of pollution |
| ✓ the solution to the problem | the solution of the problem |

3. Adjective + Preposition Groups
| Preposition | Adjectives | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| for | necessary, important, beneficial, useful, suitable, responsible, essential, harmful | Education is necessary for development. Cars are responsible for some emissions. |
| to | harmful, beneficial, important, similar, related, relevant, essential, opposed | Pollution is harmful to health. This system is similar to the previous one. |
| in | interested, successful, effective, involved, experienced | The policy was effective in reducing emissions. |
| of | aware, capable, afraid, proud, characteristic | Technology is capable of improving productivity. |
| on | dependent, based, focused, reliant | The report is based on scientific evidence. |
| with | associated, connected, concerned, consistent, satisfied | Air pollution is associated with health problems. |
| from | different, separate, protected, free | Renewable energy is different from fossil-fuel energy. |
Two pairs worth knowing exactly: important for = needed to achieve a result (Education is important for economic development), while important to = personally valued (Education is important to students). And although harmful for exists, harmful to is the natural choice for health and the environment.

How to use this quiz
- Start with group 1 until you never write the important of again. That single error costs marks in every essay.
- Then do group 2 – the nouns that take for, to, in, between and with instead of of.
- Group 5 is the largest: do it in two sittings and use Mistake Quiz the next day.
- Finish with group 7, the impact / effect of X on Y frame, and reuse it in every essay you write.
